Happy New Year to all our blog followers! While some may be tempted to make a bunch of resolutions (many of which are likely to be abandoned by February), we’d like to suggest an alternative approach.

A fresh year is the perfect opportunity to take stock of how you approach your work – whether you’re out on site, managing projects in the office or traveling between locations. Now is your chance to reflect, refine and reinvigorate your daily routines, the tools you use and working relationships. Read on to discover some key areas where small changes can lead to big improvements.

A time for re-evaluation:

January is the ideal month to step back and look not only at what you’re working on but how you are going about it. Make the most of this time of re-evaluation by exploring these four areas:

  1. Processes
Review your daily routines – things like how you start and end your day, plan tasks, record data or handle purchasing. Are there inefficiencies slowing you down? For instance, could you improve scheduling or streamline how orders are placed? Small adjustments here can free up time and energy for what really matters.
  1. Tools
Whether it’s a trowel, a fleet vehicle or construction management software, your tools are only as effective as the care and thought you put into them. Are they well-maintained and utilised to the maximum advantage? This is a good time to assess what’s working, what needs attention and what might require upgrading. For example, could taking time to better understand or upgrade your project management software save time or reduce errors?
  1. Relationships
Strong communication is the foundation of any successful project. Consider how your team interacts with one another – are meetings effective, is feedback encouraged and do colleagues feel supported? Fostering a collaborative environment can make even the toughest jobs more manageable.
  1. Roles
Finally, reflect on your role. Does it provide job satisfaction or are there areas for growth? Would additional training, task re-evaluation or adopting new technology help you to thrive? Remember to also consider your long-term goals – are you building the skills and experience you need to achieve them? Would discussing them with a manager or supervisor help? Taking charge of your professional development is one resolution worth keeping.

Small changes, big results

As Robert Collier, one of the early trailblazers for philosophies around personal growth, said: “Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” Taking time now to assess and refine your work habits can set you up for a more productive and fulfilling year ahead.
