SOCIAL VALUE METRIC – PEOPLE

THE BACKGROUND

In today’s fast-paced construction industry, skills shortages, new regulations and evolving technologies are reshaping what clients and projects require. As Sheriff Construction and Sheriff Brickworks have grown, we recognised the need to strengthen our capability across all teams – ensuring we continue delivering safely, compliantly and to a high standard, while also providing secure, progressive employment for the people who make our business possible.

OUR APPROACH

We have embedded structured training and development across our organisation – supporting people at every level, from labourer and apprentice through to management and leadership. Our approach combines technical training, recognised qualifications, mentoring and wellbeing initiatives, supported by systems that ensure training is planned, tracked and consistently delivered.

Key measures include:

  • All site workers now hold CSCS Level 2 minimum, with progression to Gold and Black cards supported where relevant.
  • A comprehensive Training Matrix tracks qualifications for staff and subcontractors, ensuring re-training is completed before expiry.
  • Ongoing technical training across roofing and brickwork, including refresher sessions and Building Safety Regulations awareness.
  • Leadership development including Level 7 Leaders in Construction for all Contract Managers, plus professional coaching for senior leaders.
  • Support for broader capability such as NEBOSH qualification, software training and access to digital learning resources including the Supply Chain Sustainability School.
  • A whole-person approach – including mental health awareness, suicide prevention training, wellbeing Toolbox Talks and internal resources to help people thrive at work and at home.

THE OUTCOME

By investing in training, qualifications and wellbeing, we are strengthening both individual career opportunities and the resilience of our business. Our teams are increasingly confident, capable and highly employable – supported not just to do their jobs well, but to grow, progress and feel valued as people. This culture of development contributes to safer working practices, improved quality outcomes and stronger long-term retention across our workforce.
