Back in November last year, we reported on a free masterclass for bricklayers that was being offered by the Home Builders Federation (HBF) and how an equivalent opportunity would soon be made available for roofers.
This month, the HBF have released that opportunity so, if improving your roofing skills is on your ‘to do’ list, read on.
What’s it all about?
Suitable for anyone working as a roofing contractor or who is involved in the supervision or management of roofing works, this new masterclass aims to enhance the skills of roofing trades working on home building sites and minimise defects and warranty claims at the roofing build stage.
Developed in collaboration with the National House Building Council (NHBC) and the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC), the roofing masterclass aligns with the NFRC RoofCERT Accreditation, the UK’s only scheme for accredited roofing skills, thereby ensuring participants receive industry-relevant training. The best part is that it’s entirely free (due to a £3 million investment by CITB in the home building industry), making this a fantastic opportunity for anyone in the roofing business!
What to expect?
The masterclass is a 90-minute session that offers roofers, roofing supervisors and site managers an overview of some of the common issues identified by NHBC inspection teams along with best practice and insights on key build areas, including:
- Underlay and battens and roofing components
- Mortar
- Fire stopping
- Condensation control/ ventilation
- Weathering and flashings
- Fixing of slates and tiles
- Wet and dry verges and valleys
- Dry/ ventilated ridges
Delivered by highly experienced NHBC Building Inspectors, participants will receive copies of all the slides, the relevant chapters from the NHBC Standards, a practice quiz and contact information for further technical queries, all of which will help them to keep improving these skills on the job.
Crucially this masterclass session can be delivered on or near your site to minimise disruption to the workday, providing there is a suitable room for participants such as a large site office or canteen. Each session should have a minimum of five and maximum of twelve delegates.
