As another year draws to a close, it’s the perfect time to reflect on everything 2024 has brought for Sheriff Construction. From exciting new projects to groundbreaking innovations and growing our team, this year has been filled with milestones that remind us why we love what we do.

Our journey has been one of growth, learning, collaboration, and innovation, culminating in a year of remarkable success. We’re immensely proud of all that we’ve accomplished so, in our last blog of the year, we invite you to join us in celebrating the highpoints of 2024.

A year of highpoints

The construction sector always presents challenges, especially with rising material costs and labour supply issues and 2024 has been no exception. However, we prefer to focus on the positives, of which there have been many for our company. Here are some of our top highlights:

  • At the beginning of the year, we were delighted to be declared the winner of the January 2024 IKO Contractor Recognition Award for our roofing projects at the former Ford HQ in Brentwood and Epping Gate. Later, this was followed by Sheriff taking the second place ‘Highly Commended’ award at IKO’s overall awards for the year.
  • Across our roofing and brickwork divisions, we now employ approximately 150 people and are so proud of the quality workmanship they have displayed at sites across London and the Home Counties. Delivering projects to high standards is what helps us keep good relationships with our long-term clients as well as attract new ones. This year, for example, we’ve been pleased to gain contracts with Hills Partnerships in Oxford, Bugler in Fulham and Vistry in Bracknell.
  • Our ventures in property development continued with our sister company ‘Limon Homes’ finishing projects at North Street in Luton. Seeking to take this side of our work to a new level, our Managing Director has, alongside a business partner, founded a new property development company called ‘Crestview’. The company is already working on a significant development in Luton and exploring a range of other opportunities.
  • Our bricklaying team in Woolwich were the first to start using G decking as part of their safety programme. This game-changing innovation involves setting up a temporary platform which provides a safe and stable working surface at various heights. As well as improving safety, the system streamlines workflows (for instance by allowing materials to be placed exactly where they are needed) and boosts overall productivity.
  • Our roofing teams began working with IKO’s new Permatec LI waterproofing solution which is helping to reduce the environmental impact of construction by having over 50% lower embodied carbon.
  • Both Sheriff Brickworks and Sheriff Construction’s roofing teams were excited to work with Higgins Partnerships to bring the development of 134 highly sustainable properties to life. The project in Fulham has involved building to rigorous Passivhaus Classic Standards, resulting in structures that consume very little energy for heating or cooling.
  • Our office team has expanded, boosting our QS and administrative functions and bringing in-house other areas of expertise like architecting. We also employed our second Apprentice QS. Welcome to all who have joined us this year.
  • Sheriff successfully renewed all our professional accreditations, e.g. CHAS, SMAS and Gold membership of Constructionline.
  • We introduced the Causeway ‘Donseed’ digital workforce management system across both our brickwork and roofing divisions. Usually used by companies much larger than us, we took the decision to keep up with this latest technology, which is giving us greater control of our sites, improving safety and increasing efficiency.
  • As part of our commitment to grassroots football, we proudly sponsored several local teams this year. Highlights included Leighton Woodside U16 Girls, who swept to the top of their league, won their regional cup final and were undefeated; FC Polonia (Luton) U11 Boys, who were both league and cup champions; and Stevenage Futsal Ballers U12s, who clinched multiple titles without a single defeat. We certainly know how to back a winner!
  • We’ve continued to use our website and weekly blog to share the latest news from our company alongside other topics of interest to our sector. This year, we published a series of blogs focused on safety, another series that gave a ‘shout out’ to our suppliers and covered all kinds of other topics like innovative new products, training opportunities, government policy, environmental issues and mental health. Doing this has raised our profile on social media, taking our LinkedIn followers to almost 1300.

Managing Director, Ekrem Mahmutaj commented:

“This has been another year of growth and achievement for our company, and there are many people I would like to thank for their role in this success. From our dedicated site and office teams to our clients, suppliers and all the professionals who support our work, your contributions have been invaluable.

“There is much to be proud of, but one of the standout moments for me was when Sheriff won IKO’s ‘Highly Commended’ award. While the award was for our roofing work, it truly represents what we strive to achieve across the entire company. Our ethos is to exceed expectations, whether that’s in collaborating with suppliers or by delivering top-quality workmanship for our clients. I’m incredibly proud of the commitment and effort everyone puts into their work and I thank you all wholeheartedly.

“I hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved break over the holiday season, and let’s return even stronger in 2025!”
