As we approach International Women’s Day 2025, the call to ‘Accelerate Action’ for gender equality has never been more urgent. It’s a time to take decisive steps toward creating more inclusive and equal opportunities, particularly in industries that have long been dominated by men.
The construction sector, in particular, is one where gender equality could actually be crucial for future growth and success. One significant initiative making strides in this area is the Women into Home Building programme. Take a look at this week’s blog to learn more.
Breaking barriers in site management
Sponsored by the National House Building Council, the Women into Home Building programme is actively shaping the future of the construction industry by empowering women to step into site management roles, a vital area where the need for skilled professionals is growing.
Since its launch in January 2023, the programme has already helped over 150 women gain insight into the world of home building and more than 90 to complete valuable site management work placements. With over 25 women securing full-time employment in the sector, the programme is making a tangible difference.
What the programme offers
This exciting initiative offers a comprehensive approach to getting women involved in construction site management:
- Insight and training: The programme begins with a week of online training and insight, including a virtual site visit and sessions covering essential areas such as health and safety and modern methods of construction.
- Work experience: Participants are matched with a local home-building site for a two-week work placement, offering hands-on experience and the chance to connect with industry professionals.
- Support with costs: Acknowledging the barriers women may face in terms of travel or childcare, the programme provides support for these expenses, ensuring that no one is left behind.
The importance of representation
The construction industry is in the midst of a skills shortage, particularly in site management roles. The Women into Home Building programme not only addresses this need but also works to change the culture of the industry by increasing female representation in leadership roles. Women bring diverse perspectives to problem-solving and their involvement in site management has the potential to drive innovative and sustainable practices in construction.
Local placements
With eleven home builders partnering with the programme, local placements are opening doors to women all across England, Scotland and Wales.
For those in our region, the programme has a range of opportunities available in areas such as North Kensington, Stratford, Wandsworth and locations across Eastern England. This local presence makes it easier for women in the region to access valuable work experience and training in home building.
Celebrating progress on International Women’s Day
As we look ahead to International Women’s Day on March 8, the theme Accelerate Action serves as a powerful reminder of the progress still needed to achieve gender equality. By supporting initiatives like the Women into Home Building programme, we can take meaningful steps toward gender parity in construction and beyond.
Whether through grassroots programmes, like the one highlighted here, or by fostering inclusive practices in workplaces, we all have a role to play in Accelerating Action. In the construction sector, this means creating more pathways for women to take leadership roles, particularly in site management, and providing the resources they need to succeed.
