As we approach the end of 2025, it’s once again time for Sheriff Construction to look back at everything this year has presented and begin making plans for the new year ahead.
From celebrating our 20th anniversary with a gala and charity challenge to securing some of our most significant roofing and brickwork contracts ever; from inspiring young people into our sector to building up our newest sister companies; and from achieving new accreditations to developing our response to cyber security, quality and social value – this year has truly given us lots to feel proud of. Join us in remembering our most special moments through our last blog of 2025.
With young people nervously awaiting their exam results, many will be eagerly looking forward to starting sixth form or college in the autumn.
Others, however, may still be feeling stuck as to how to answer that big question – what next? As not everyone wants to take a full-on academic route, we’re sharing our insights into some of the practical careers available in construction. We already looked at roofing back in June, so this week we’re asking – ‘could bricklaying be your path?’

A new NVQ for Brickwork Technicians has just been launched by the Association of Brickwork Contractors.
With building safety compliance in mind, the qualification has been designed for the thousands of people who work within the brickwork industry on important tasks that support the bricklaying process (but who are not actually bricklayers). Find out more here.

Both the UK Herald and London Journal picked up the story of our 17 years in the industry and recent success, noting the national recognition our company has gained for delivering exceptional work on commercial and residential projects and for our pursuit of innovation. Sheriff Construction is delighted to announce that we’ve just secured our biggest brickwork contract to date. Valued at just over £6.1m, the deal will see our team supporting a major UK housebuilder at 5-acre regeneration site in Woolwich, London.
This is a significant win for Sheriff Construction as it cements the strong relationship we’ve built up with this client (who we’re not naming right now due to our protocols around confidentiality) and will provide our team with at least 2-years’ worth of secure work. The contract is also among the first to be secured since our company restructured, meaning the job will be managed through our sister company, Sheriff Brickworks. On Saturday, Sheriff Construction’s team members, their families and others who work alongside us came together for the annual Christmas bash.
Held at Venue 360’s Balcony Bar, it was a night of eating, drinking and of course dancing! Around 80 people came along and, as always, it was great to see everyone enjoying the festivities. Our thanks to everyone who joined us for this brilliant night out.
Although there are a few weeks left of 2022, whenever we host this party, it always seems like the right time to reflect on the year gone by. Once again it has been a busy year with lots of changes and some ups and downs in Sheriff’s world. In this week’s blog, we’ve picked out some of our highlights.
In its ‘State of the Trade’ survey, published last October, the Federation of Master Builders found that 60% of small-to-medium sized construction companies had pressed the pause button on jobs due to a lack of skilled tradespeople. 12% had cancelled work due to a lack of skilled tradespeople and 45% were particularly struggling to hire bricklayers.
A key problem is that the industry has an ageing workforce and young Brits are shying away from entering traditional trades. Some suggest that young people ‘leave’ our industry as young as 12 years old! Sounds weird but think about it. Pre-schoolers and primary schoolkids love the idea of building things (influenced perhaps by ‘Bob the Builder’ and games like Minecraft). But, something changes as they reach their teenage years and suddenly construction is seen as ‘dirty work’ or something for ‘those who don’t go to college’.
So, in today’s blog, we’re going to try to dispel some of those negative ideas and showcase what it really means to be a bricklayer.
